Texas Texas. Say What You Want. The Collection

Women and Texas History. Selected Essays

Women have long made significant contributions to Texas history. Only in recent years, however, has their part in that history begun to be told. The great strides made in Texas women's studies are reflected in this important new book of essays about women and their many roles in the history of our state. In October 1990, the Texas State Historical Association sponsored a conference, "Women and Texas History," which brought together some of the leading scholars in the field of women's studies. This highly successful conference — attended by hundreds and awarded recognition for its excellence by the AASLH — produced a raft of exciting presentations which demonstrated the vigorous quality and growth of women's studies in and about Texas. Women and Texas History includes thirteen of the best presentations at the conference. This "milestone" publication, notes Fane Downs in her introduction to Women and Texas History, represents "the emerging maturity of the field of Texas women's history; moreover, these essays add significantly to our knowledge of the complex and diverse history of Texas." This ground-breaking volume will be of interest to students, scholars, and general readers, and is well adapted to classroom use.Publication of this book was made possible in part by grants from the RGK Foundation of Austin and the Texas Committee for the Humanities, a state program of the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Jo Ella Powell Exley Texas Tears and Sunshine. Voices of Frontier Women

Texas Tears and Texas Sunshine are the names of popular quilt patterns, and in this volume, now in its seventh printing, sixteen pioneer women describe how they pieced together a life for their families on the harsh frontier. Their first-person narratives, selected and edited by Jo Ella Powell Exley, provide a gripping, highly personal history of the state from Stephen F. Austin's original settlement through the taming of its last frontier in the west. The stories in Texas Tears and Texas Sunshine cover nearly a century, from the log cabin days of Anglo colonization and the Old Three Hundred to the settlement of the South Plains in the early twentieth century. Through the years, Indian raids, frontier-style "society balls," the Runaway Scrape, plantation life, yellow fever, trail drives, and the bloody Council House fight in San Antonio provided some of the blocks for this quilt. The rugged sunshine of daily life and the tears of frontier hardship combine in fascinating, realistic patterns. " . . . a fascinating collection of some of the Texas women's experiences. . . . Texas Tears and Texas Sunshine, a realistic look at the women of the frontier, is a book that also instills lessons of pride and courage for today."-Southern LivingJO ELLA POWELL EXLEY is herself a fifth-generation descendant of Texas pioneers. She is a longtime schoolteacher in the Houston area.

Silver Wings: The U.S. Army Airforce in Texas 1940-1946, Thomas Alexander has created a concise and colorful portrait of Texas during World War II, illustrating how the arrival of thousands of strangers in military uniforms forever changed the faces of eight towns and cities across the Lone Star State. ALEXANDER was a commissioner for the Texas Historical Commission for twelve years, where he was integral in establishing historical markers at important sites of Texas World War II history. The Texas Military Experience

Ever since the Alamo, the military has been a vivid part of the Texas experience. Not until now, though, have scholars addressed the significance of that experience in one book.In The Texas Military Experience, prominent authors reevaluate famous personalities, reassess noted battles and units, and bring fresh perspectives to such matters as the interplay of fiction, film, and historical understanding. Edited and with an introduction by Joseph G. Dawson III, The Texas Military Experience offers the best overview of the subject available. The Battle of San Jacinto, exploits of the Texas Rangers, the Indian-fighting cavalry of the Texas High Plains, and the World War II campaign of the 36th Infantry Division up the spine of Italy all have formed part of the state's history and image. Other aspects of the military experience are less well known but have also contributed to Lone Star history: the role of Hispanics in the Texas Revolution, the contributions of African-American soldiers on the frontier, the activities of army wives in the late nineteenth century. The engaging writing styles of the various authors will make this book valuable to the reading public interested in popular aspects of the Texas military tradition, and the solid research will make it indispensable to scholars of military and Texas history.
